For nearly a decade the last weekend in August finds the streets of Downtown Yakima slammed with hoopsters competing for fun or truly working on their dunking skills. Yakima’s 3-on-3 basketball tournament is the second largest in Washington state and promises competition for everyone. This fun-filled family event, organized by the Yakima Valley Sports Commission in partnership with area sponsors, had a record-breaking 366 teams last year with teams ranging from six years old to the over 45 competitor in all skill levels for both men and women.
Area hotels and restaurants roll out the welcome matt to ensure out-of-town competitors are well taken care of. According to Rich Austin, director of sports, “This tournament is fun and exciting both for the competitors and our staff. It’s a lot of work but we look forward to seeing this tournament grow and watching how much fun all the teams have. Our community and sponsors really embrace this event and each year we put into action new ideas on how to improve it. And we must be doing something right because we see folks return year after year.”
