Joe Schmitt writes a weekly blog called The Good Life, featuring information about the region’s history, culture, climate and economy. The blog also showcases new residents, clubs and organizations, outdoor recreational opportunities and local events.
The streets rumble the first weekend in August as over 1,000 street rod cars begin their decent into Yakima for the 39th annual Vintiques Northwest Nationals, the largest vintage car show in Central Washington and the third largest in Washington state. The is a two-day event that takes place at State Fair Park and brings nearly 15,000 car enthusiasts from around the West Coast and Canada.
The weekend is a fun-filled extravaganza that showcases vintage and antique (hence the name Vintiques) street rods from 1972 model year and older. The public is invited to join Vintique owners and their families for a weekend of awards, car games, model car competitions, family BBQ’s, adult and kid games, Yakima Valley tours, and free concerts each evening.
Even local residents who don’t make it down to State Fair Park enjoy seeing these cars driving around town and stopping at various locations so all can appreciate the dedication and craftsmanship these cars require. From informal BBQ’s at local parks between a few Yakima car enthusiasts in the early 70’s quickly turned into a non-profit with an annual event attracting street rods from California and Canada. According to Bill Koreski, current board member and long-time event organizer, “The founding members really didn’t have a plan to organize such a large event but other car groups around the region helped them begin the association, they created the name and logo, and went with it.
Today we couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished in making this event one of the premier events in the industry.” We agree. The public is invited to share the pleasures of an evening concert (free with show admission) and the spectacular weekend showcase of street rods. Enjoy two full days of games and contests, awards, model car competition (open to all ages), valley tours, car games, adult and kids games, vendors will be in the air-conditioned Sundome for event goers to enjoy a little shopping, bingo for the ladies, a great BBQ and door prize.
